Iceland: unlocking untapped geothermal potential
In Iceland, GEOFLEXHeat will focus on utilizing excess geothermal brine, which currently exits at 85°C and remains underutilized in district heating networks. By integrating a High-Temperature Heat Pump (HTHP), the project will upgrade this heat for industrial processes, including fish meal production and greenhouse heating.
Additionally, a thermal energy storage system will be tested to increase flexibility and cost efficiency in district heating. While mineral scaling is less of a concern in Iceland, the project will still analyse long-term risks and maintenance requirements.

Italy: industrial heat from high-temperature geothermal wells
The Italian demonstration site will focus on geothermal wells with temperatures above 150°C, where scaling issues from silica and calcium carbonate deposits present a major challenge. GEOFLEXHeat will deploy an innovative Scaling Reactor and Heat Pipe Heat Exchanger (HPHE) to improve heat extraction efficiency and reduce mineral buildup.
The project will identify the most suitable site from 25+ new geothermal developments in central Italy (Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, Latium), ensuring that industries can directly utilize geothermal energy for process heat.
