REVOLUTIONASING GEOTHERMAL EXTRACTION FOR INDUSTRIAL HEAT APPLICATIONS

Introduction to the project

GEOFLEXHEAT is an EU-funded project aimed at transforming the European geothermal energy sector by introducing innovative technologies to improve heat extraction, efficiency, and application across various industrial sectors, with a strong focus on district heating and cooling (DHC) networks.
Bringing together a consortium of leading research institutions, SMEs, and industry experts, the project addresses key challenges such as scalability, integration, and social acceptance of geothermal systems.

At its core, GEOFLEXHEAT develops a series of innovative technologies to:

Enhance heat recovery from geothermal brine while producing valuable mineral byproducts
Generate cost-effective, high-temperature heat supply essential for industrial applications and district heating
Enable real-time system optimisation and management of geothermal plants, enhance the decarbonisation of energy systems.

Through comprehensive modelling and demonstration, the project aims to strengthen Europe’s leadership in renewable heating and cooling, ensure the reliable and sustainable supply of geothermal energy, and foster greater public and policy acceptance of geothermal solutions.

Key objectives and expected outcomes

GEOFLEXHeat is set to revolutionize geothermal energy by introducing innovative technologies that enhance heat extraction and efficiency while expanding its applications across various industrial sectors. A major breakthrough of the project is the development of a Heat Pipe Heat Exchanger (HPHE) scaling harvesting system coupled with a Scaling Reactor, which will not only optimize heat recovery from geothermal brine but also extract valuable mineral byproducts.
